I think I know what you mean.
It seems to me that the psych field is constantly changing. People hadn't heard of skin picking when I was growing up. Seriously. A teacher reported me to the school counselor for skin picking & the counselor had never heard of it before. Now, at least it's recognized as a disorder. But, I think the professionals are still trying to figure out all the details.

There's probably multiple different possible causes & different treatments that work depending on the cause.

I don't think I have seen this anywhere,  but I wouldn't be surprised if it was related to ADHD, too. Like, I can't sit still, so I pick at my skin.

Edit: oh. A quick search says I'm not the only one that thinks it's related to ADHD. Skin picking,  hair pulling, nail biting, and cheek biting are all related to ADHD.

that sounds so unreal; honestly i forget how underdeveloped the psychological field is and how its barely gaining any studies in our modern era :/

and that actually makes a lot of sense! i've always seen my form of dermatillomania more as a fidgeting thing rather than anything. i used to do it a LOT when school was open, especially before tests

not an ocd expert either but yeah obsessive and/or compulsive behavior is actually pretty common. people who would not fill the diagnostic criteria for any mental illness can still have rituals that in another context could be considered compulsive and everyone has intrusive thoughts and can exhibit otherwise obsessive behavior. i'm pretty sure ocd as a personality disorder is more about how the obsessions and compulsions interact with each other than it is about the obsessions and compulsions themselves. but i'm not a medical expert obviously

I have like. A weird amount going on in my head, but I remember when I bought up picking to my psychiatrist he seemed rather concerned. I never considered that it would be disordered behaviour, but since then I've heard heaps about this!

I also have ADHD, as well as bipolar II, GAD and looking at a diagnosis of BPD.. so they could all easily be some kinda "cause" of the picking behaviour, if it isn't just habitual to begin with.

Ur very right about the field having so many ??? areas, like the actual cause of depression is still quite unknown for example. Honestly it's wack, but super interesting. The overlap between mental health and physical health especially interests me! For example, because I have adhd and bipolar, im much much more likely to develop parkinsons diseas, as they're all caused by lack of/disfunctioning dopamine!

Aaaaand I’m back here. Usually I vent in the Atheista vent thread but I’m the only person there and I don’t want to get marked for spamming so I’ll just dump my thoughts here. Just need to get em out.

this week has been hectic for me. I started off with awful body aches and pains, i’m incredibly unmotivated for college, and i just wish i can drop out already so i can do the things i like again. College takes up so much of my time. I haven’t been able to draw in so long and i barely got back into making kandi again. I genuinely fucking hate college and i don’t care what anyone says to me anymore, i WILL drop out because i KNOW its the one thing that continues to depress me and make me unhappy. Maybe if they didnt pile literal stacks of work for someone who is clearly very mentally ill.

I have more to say but i’ll stop here for now. I’ll probably forget about it because dissociation and forgetting things is the only thing that keeps me out of spiraling into my thoughts, which usually causes me to split.

Please feel free to vent here.

I don't want to tell you what to do regarding college but I can tell you what I did... I didn't enjoy my freshman year. The very first semester, I knew I wanted to transfer colleges. They second semester, I had a really bad night. I stayed up all night trying to do my chemistry homework. In the morning, I tried to get an emergency appointment with a counselor at the student health center. The director saw me instead & helped me get medical leave for 2 weeks. Ultimately, I did transfer & was happier at the smaller college. I was also able to get a number of accommodations through the Disability Services office, which I think was a division of a larger office--Academic Services, which offered tutoring & the writing center. Disability Services granted me a single dorm room (instead of shared), private test taking room (instead of in the classroom), and extended time on tests.

Admittedly, things are different now with a pandemic & online school...

Some other thoughts....
Instead of dropping out entirely, what about a different type of school? Ex. My brother went to trade school to become a carpenter instead of a traditional 4-year college. (I am pretty sure they're still in-person despite the pandemic. It's hard to have online carpentry.)
Or just changing your major? Some majors are more hands on than others. Maybe a more hands-on approach would be better.
Or, what about only taking one or two classes? I know it will take longer to graduate, but you'll have less work to do at a time than 4 (or however many you are taking).

Again, I don't want to tell you what to do. If you want to drop out, that's up to you. You know you best.

I appreciate the advice but my experience is much unlike yours. I'm happy you were able to get the help you needed but I live in an incredibly conservative community who barely listened to me when I first suggested I have depression--why? Because I'm "too smart." Yes, they literally told me I'm too smart to be depressed and unhappy.

I'm also an immigrant who was forced into the American education system and I honestly cannot stand any of it. I wish things were different. I love my major, I love learning, I love the concept, but the way America executes its educational system is literally garbage, especially in poor communities like mine. Also, I have BPD, which pretty much rules over my entire life. Even if I did try not to drop out, I think it would lead me to doing bad stuff to myself because I'm just too unwell for a system built for people not like myself.

Again, I do appreciate the help, but I've made my choice to drop out in a year. I plan on making a small business and gather in income through making accessories when I move in with my boyfriend. He has a talent for selling things somehow, despite me being the extrovert and him being the introvert. I'm sure I'll be able to compensate. And I do always have the option of going into education as an older adult if I did change my mind, but I doubt I would--I'm rather stubborn.

I dropped out of college, and I don't know that I'll ever go back. I had very lofty ideas of what college would be, but I hated it, for the most part, and also found that, even with accommodations, the system didn't work for me (I have ADHD, and at the time, my PTSD was very bad, and I was "coping" with it through addiction.) I don't have any strong advice, but, what you're feeling isn't in any way irrational, and I think you're making a good choice. And yes, you can always go back to college as an older adult, I have a friend who's doing that right now.
