Great question, FunnyValentine.
For an official diagnosis, doctors may use one or more questionnaires about the symptoms you're experiencing, such as the Beck Depression Inventory and the PHQ-9. Here's a copy of the PHQ-9 you can take online: https://www.mdcalc.com/phq-9-patient-health-questionnaire-9

Sorry, this is sort of a ramble.
Sometimes I feel like I have nothing to offer. I'm not very smart and I was always told that I was as a child and now that I've gotten older and I haven't really lived up to that expectation of myself, it's hard. The only thing I'm good at I didn't keep up after high school and I knew I would never make it professionally even though I do think I was pretty good (I play flute). I think this is rearing it's ugly head because I've finally (tmi) started my period 4 days late and I'm in a lot of pain and I'm hormonal, but it's hard. I think playing flute again would make me happy but I think the loss of the clear tone I had in high school would discourage me. Maybe I should buy a book of music to get back in the groove. I was 1st chair by the time I was a senior and I feel like maybe I shouldn't just give it up. I'm not sure. My mental health has been on a steady decline since I graduated almost 2 years ago. I've barely picked my flute up since then. I just miss playing. What I really miss is marching but I can't do that anymore. And even if I could go to college and march, most college bands only march piccolos and I don't really like piccolo. I played it for 3 years in high school and it's just not really for me. I'm not really sure what to do.

Valentine, it's understandable that you don't like talking to strangers/therapists. It's very hard for me to find a therapist that makes me feel comfortable. Perhaps there are some things that you can work on by yourself without a therapist.

I don't know if these will apply to you or not but here are 2 things I personally have worked on:
1. I journal every night. It is part of my bedtime routine. It does not make the depression go away, but at least my journal is a safe place to vent. There are many variations, like bullet journaling & gratitude journaling. I am not someone who requires myself to write 3 pages or 15 minutes (or some of the other rules I've heard). If I'm too tired to write much, I allow myself to just write the date and the word "exhausted".
2. When I got laid off at the start of the pandemic, I stopped taking care of myself. I stopped showering. I stopped exercising. etc.  I lost my routine because I had nowhere to be and I literally couldn't go anywhere because of lockdown.  I worked to re-build a routine. I felt like I didn't have the energy to stand up to take a shower but I could take a bath. I started doing squats & other small exercises at home. I kept a water bottle nearby to remind me to stay hydrated, etc.

Hm, yeah i agree that i really should get a routine going. i feel like i was more talented/motivated in high school but that's probably because i got dressed every day and i had a routine. thank you so much for talking to me!!

THAT bitch

school is literally killing me right now. i'm currently partially hospitalized for mental health, but my school is still expecting so much of me and i'm just so overwhelmed. you'd think that bc i've been a straight A student for years that they'd let me off the hook for a couple assignments bc i've proven myself, but they just keep wanting more. i hate the education system and i really hope i graduate this year.
