I've been thinking about creating an insomnia thread for a while.  I've noticed the topic of sleep issues pop up in other threads, like Let's Be Real, but I wanted a dedicated space for sleep issues.

Personally, I have insomnia & probably always had. Even as a child, I could not sleep through the night.  I would wake up hours before I  needed to get up for school. Over the last 10 years, I have been on several sleep medications.
Last night, I slept from 9 PM to 1 AM. I fell back asleep after 2:30 only after taking a prescription meditation that I am allowed to take "as needed" (as opposed to every day at the same time). I don't necessarily like taking meds, but sometimes non-medication techniques aren't enough.  Ex. I have a weighted blanket & lavender oil but I still couldn't sleep last night.

What sleep issue(s) do you have? How do you cope?

I find having this forum very helpful, thanks so much for making this!

I usually find it hard to sleep during the night but will happily sleep during the day for hours, when I wake up I’m still restlessly tired and want to go back to bed but during the night is a different story. I find this game super helpful with the waiting hours as it makes me wanna stay up n wait but also do something productive like drawing or writing to keep me up and pass the time.
It really helps my body let out random bursts of energy at the time and tire myself out for the night

not me stumbling upon this thread when i'm procrastinating on sleeping at 7:20 AM o///o

seriously though i don't know why i'm like this... every time i try to fix my sleep schedule it backfires drastically. i've found that staying up for a full day helps me "reset" it a bit - aka i'll go to bed at 4 AM instead of 8 AM - but it's incredibly taxing health-wise and definitely not sustainable. i don't want to take medication because i don't want to deal with the inevitable withdrawal i'll get from it, so i'd also really like to know how other people cope

i suffer so bad i go from falling asleep at 4pm and waking up at 4am to sleeping from 4-6am and waking up at noon. I struggle to sleep so like i have to exhaust myself before which normally involves reading or playing challenging games so my brain gives up and shuts down. sometimes if i dont exhaust myself i lay in bed making up stories in my head for hours

I struggled to fall asleep for most of last year because of ADHD meds + shitty mental health but I got a weighted blanket for Christmas and it's honestly been a lifesaver. I haven't stayed up till sunrise since I got it and I'm reeeeaaallllyyy hoping it stays that way.

I suffer from insomnia, sleep paralysis and recurrent nightmares :/ i was put on melatonin to help aid my sleep but theyve taken away the pills, its really hard for me to sleep at night nowadays, i end up taking multiple naps in a day and that doesnt help it much at all, even though i constantly feel tired

I am not a doctor but I think that's usually considered insomnia. I have often been told it should take 20 minutes or less to fall asleep.

I often have trouble falling asleep because I can't just shut my mind off. It's racing around thinking about things that happened today or what I have planned for tomorrow, etc.

Is this what happens to you? Or is there something else that you think is causing you to take a while to fall asleep?

I think it doesn't hurt to bring it up with a doctor, especially if you have medical conditions or are taking medication. Sometimes medication or conditions affect sleep. For example, I noticed you post in the ADHD thread & I've read that many people with ADHD have trouble falling asleep:
