apparently, you're supposed to get therapy to help you manage executive dysfunction, not just medication?

Yeah...I'm not a big fan of therapy but yes, you are "supposed" to get therapy to help with executive functioning. My sig other also has ADHD & their counselor works with them on goal setting. I have tried counseling but find that counselors aren't necessarily able to help with what I want help with (like poor concentration & restlessness).

There are definitely things you can work on on your own.
Ex. I have a physical planner I write down to-do lists in, in addition to using my Google calendar for appointments & reminders. (I suggested this to a friend who didn't have Google/Gmail & her digital calendar doesn't have a reminders option! Gmail/Google calendar has options for Events, Reminders, and Goals.) I find having these planners/calendars/lists is helpful. When I get distracted, I have a list to come back to. I can cross things off as I go & see what I still have left to do.
Ex. If you are restless like me, get some fidget toys! I have a Tangle, multiple stress balls, & a fidget spinner to name a few. Some people also like rubbing a ribbon or other nice feeling cloth. I used to do that but have upgraded to more active toys.

There are probably also some ADHD Self-help books, but I can't recommend any. Anyone else have any suggestions?

I have also heard some people with ADHD like essential oils for concentration. Does anyone on here use them? What do you like?
I don't know much about essential oils (heads up though- Young and Living essential oils- that's a pyramid scheme. I just know bc my mom has a friend who does that AND Lularoe, which is also a pyramid scheme, AND she's in a cult with my mom. Always do a TON of research about essential oils, and basically assume anything the people SELLING THEM to you are going to lie to your face, probably unknowingly because they've bought into their own hype and less because they're malicious. Essential oils are very concentrated, and people have misused them in ways that actually causes harm.)  But, I've heard it said a lot over the years, that peppermint helps with focus, so anything with peppermint- a candle, an essential oil diffuser, or actually keeping peppermints around, is supposed to be helpful. I've also heard because of the way smell and taste are associated with memory, it can help to chew gum as you study, and then chew the same flavor of gum while you take a test.

Yes, I like mints & gum. I was not allowed to chew them in school back in the day. I also like your suggestion of a peppermint candle. I do have candles in my apartment, but not everyone can have candles (ex. in a dorm room, or if there are pets/children that may be unsafe).

I agree with being leery of anyone claiming essential oils are a cure or miracle drug. But I have heard that some people find diffusing oils to be helpful for concentration. I think diffusing is generally safe (safer than applying to skin or drinking). Read the labels & follow instructions. .

I agree that people should do their own research. I like PubMed, which is a database of journal articles, including many free ones. I just did a search on it for "peppermint and attention." It found 28 results, including a study on peppermint & spearmint essential oils for cognition. Other studies talked about other forms of peppermint, like peppermint tea. Peppermint tea sounds like another great alternative for someone who can't have candles. If a pet knocks over peppermint tea, it's much less disastrous than knocking over a peppermint candle.

what a good and considerate response! thanks for the idea about pubmed! Another smell that can help in a different way, is lavender for sleep.

Calming racing thoughts is very hard!! i don't meditate, but one thing i find helpful to relax or help sleep is to listen to guided relaxation videos on youtube. The auditory stimulation help me focus and stop racing thoughts. And since the goal isnt to pay attention, just to relax I find it works for me.

I also find ASMR videos to be helpful too.

i've been suspected of having adhd! it's really hard for me to get access to therapy/etc because i live in a generally poor community with little access to resources so i tend to do my own research on these kinds of things, but someone who is professionally diagnosed with adhd told me i most likely have it and since then i've been doing research. this person knows me prettyyy well so i think they're probably right, but i'm not sure yet. but i do find myself relating quite a lot to the things i have been researching though.

Wow!! A whole thread just about ADHD!!! :O :O
I was diagnosed in elementary school (that's the first form of learning you get in America) which I found out later is somewhat rare? Apparently, doctors are more hesitant to diagnose AFAB people with ADHD/Autism because its a "boys developmental disorder" >:P So if your AFAB and think that you have ADHD but your doctor won't diagnose you you probably have ADHD! :D
some people also mentioned in this thread that you can get therapy to help you? I've never heard of that until now I think but I've been fine on just medication! (but do what works best for you!)
Ive also never taken Adderal or Ritalin, I take this stuff called Dexmethylphenidate which was prescribed to me. It works really well but the main side effect is suppressed eating so you have to remember to eat!
It's very cool having a whole thread to talk about ADHD I like hearing what works for you guys!

I have ADD and can't take medication bc former substance abuse issues- and the non-addictive one I was prescribed apparently has a side effect of aggression and I'm not about that. The therapists in my area also kinda suck, my gf found a good one but we can't have the same one for ethical reasons (and also I'd feel weird "stealing" her therapist lol).
Most of my learning to live with it has just been learning habits that help me stay on top of things since medication and therapy are out of reach for me for now. Also learning to ask for help when I need it- my professors at school have luckily all been really understanding when I need extensions.
