My old psychiatrist wrongfully diagnosed me with BPD (For over 4 years), And this year I found out it was ADHD and not BPD. I got diagnosed and prescribed Adderall, honestly, American psychiatry is really awful..

I second the planner suggestions! Having one has really helped me, I usually drop off keeping it updated about halfway through the semester bc ADD makes me bad at even planning to do things lol. But having it for that first portion helps me get in a good routine for the rest of the semester and if I feel myself slipping I'll force myself to start it up again. I'd also suggest keeping whatever you write in it super simple. I only ever write due dates (and weekly reminders for big projects) bc if I see too many things I will get overwhelmed and not do it. And if I have a bunch of things due I'll write "3 sociology assignments" so I don't see each individual one and mentally freak out.

A lot of learning to deal with add in my experience is finding ways to work with it rather than against it. Like I know I get overwhelmed easily and never do things on time so I like to keep my planner really simple and flexible time-wise rather than trying to plan every second of my day. Also reaching out for help when you need it from teachers is rlly helpful- worst case scenario u get a snotty email and no help. And I know I've had issues with being chronically late bc my time concept is fucked, so now I just purposely underestimate the time I have to get ready so that way I end up early or on time (e.g. my work is 20 mins away so I always aim for leaving 40 mins before). And since my attention span is peanut-sized I work in small breaks every 20 mins and expect assignments to take way longer than it does for other people.

My mom always told me growing up she thought I had ADHD but never wanted to actually get me diagnosed since I did well in school. I don't want to self-diagnose or anything but I've been struggling with my mental health for a while and I always thought things I did had to do with my anxiety or depression. Recently though I've been learning more about ADHD and it seems like I'm experiencing a lot of signs/symptoms. Like I've always struggled with keeping in contact with people, I forget to message my friends by the time I'm reminded somehow about them it's been days since they texted me so then I fell awkward texting back. I forget where things are all the time, I'll set something down and can't remember where I put it a couple seconds/min later (I've heard this kind of stuff has to do with object permanence). I've also noticed I'm hypersensitive (emotionally), social functions/gatherings overwhelm me, I have to write lists for everything in order to get them done and it's so hard to motivate myself to do anything. There's so many thing I want to try or do, like I want to learn how to flip clothing, but I can't find the motivation to do it. I always have some excuse.

Anyway, I kind of want to get tested to get answers cause this could all just be part of my anxiety, but idk

Hi!! Just wanted to tell you that self-diagnosing is in no way inherently bad. There's a difference between self-diagnosing with research and just randomly saying you have something with no solid basis whatsoever. From what I've seen, it's totally valid for you to self-diagnose and possibly get official diagnosis in case you need it for educational purposes since colleges/schools don't often listen if you don't have official papers. And this is coming from someone who is also self-diagnosed with ADHD after research! I wish you well on your journey.

I guess I'm so used to people shutting down any sort of "self-diagnosis" (even with research) it makes it really discouraging to bring it up with my therapist cause I feel like its not worth it. But you're right so thanks for saying that, it honestly makes me feel better about seeking a diagnosis.

Most people nowadays don't understand that we all have reasons for self-diagnosis--personally, I have absolutely no access to help as my community is generally poor and I'd have to go far to find actually good help. There's a lot of other reasons too for other people, so don't worry. It's valid to self-diagnose with research!

So, just to clarify, have you brought it up with your therapist?
I think, where I live at least, the term therapist gets used a lot for a wide variety of people. Some can diagnose legally and some can't. But if they can't, they should be willing/able to refer you to someone who is qualified.

I also noticed in one of your posts you mentioned anxiety. I have been diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety Disorder (and a handful of other things) and I have been told the symptoms of ADHD & anxiety overlap. My current psychiatrist says it is possible to have both anxiety & ADHD.

hi i had adhd!

my parents (who are both neurodivergent) realized i had adhd when i was like. 3. but didn't seek a diagnosis until i was 14 because i had a whole host of physical health issues (still do).

i'd like to add that there's actually more than one executive function! i'm pointing this out because one of said functions is apparently the ability to regulate your emotions and the day i learned that was the day i learned i have executive dysfunction
